NewDisplayName
Hi, since its my second time building an server, i need some advice from you guys, many thanks for any help! What i currently own: Case Inter-Tech IPC 3U-30248 Server Rack ohne Netzteil schwarz https://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/Inter-Tech-IPC-3U-30248-Server-Rack-ohne-Netzteil-schwarz_978291.html Ram* 8GB (2x 4096MB) Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3-1600 DIMM CL9-9-9-24 Dual Kit https://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/8GB-Crucial-Ballistix-Sport-DDR3-1600-DIMM-CL9-Dual-Kit_794504.html OS: Debian newest version Raid Controller https://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/Delock-89384-10-Port-PCIe-2-0-x2-Low-Profile-retail_993263.html Mainboard H81 Pro BTC CPU some cheap celeron PSU some cheap PSU Ram* i would like to upgrade to (i already have it) F4-3000C15Q-16GVRB RAM (https://www.gskill.com/en/product/f4-3000c15q-16gvrb) because i have 4 sticks a 4 GB leftover from my personal computer. Currently 5 HDDs (https://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/3000GB-WD-Red-WD30EFRX-64MB-3-5Zoll--8-9cm--SATA-6Gb-s_806167.html). I want to upgrade to atleast 8 now (later more). Budget <1000€ Without storage. I need some advice for CPU/Mainboard(can i reuse the Mainboard)/PSU/usb stick (for unraid) /raid card(i would like to use the one i already have?), like always, low energy and silent. I dont care how loud it is under load and how much energy it takes, but in idle it should be silent and if possible low energy. (it will idle 99% of time) It should be as cheap as possible. Bc the hdds will cost much money and the server dont need much horse power and is not often used. I want to run plex and debian on unraid. Nothing special, but maybe i add some dockers if i find them useful. Edited November 23, 2017 by nuhll Quote Link to comment
tdallen
Hi - Do you require transcoding on Plex, and if so how many streams? That will help determine the right size for the CPU. Also, do you want to do anything serious in the debian VM? Or just play around? Edited November 23, 2017 by tdallen Quote Link to comment

Why are you starting a new thread? @tdallen - FYI -SSD Quote Link to comment

What i did i could do with a celeron, so i think everything would be ok. Edited November 23, 2017 by nuhll Quote Link to comment
tdallen
Thanks, SSD. Hmm, well - take a look at the Pentium G4620. It's less than $100 in the US, is dual core / hyperthreaded and gets 5298 Passmarks. It can use the DDR4 RAM you linked above and has enough horsepower for basic NAS plus one or two Plex streams. It could probably handle a light duty VM as well, but not at the same time as Plex. Quote Link to comment
NewDisplayName
Okay, thank you. That seems good. What MB/USB/PSU/(can i use the raid card i own) you would recommend? Quote Link to comment
tdallen
I believe you are in Germany. Unfortunately I can’t recommend a motherboard or PSU for you since I don’t know what is available there at a good price. If you want to do the research and post something, I can provide feedback. For a USB see if you can find Sandisk or Kingston. Quote Link to comment
