Shrink array and replace parity disk at same time

Recommended Posts

Hi

Hoping some more experience unraid users can give me their opinion on the following procedure and advise if I have missed anything or made any errors.

I want to shrink my array by removing 3 old hard disk drives (a 500 GB and a couple of 1 TB drives) and also replace my current 8 TB Seagate archive (SMR) parity drive with a faster non-SMR 8 TB drive and add the archive drive as a data disk to the array.

  • Pre-clear new 8 TB drive.
  • Move all data from the 3 old drives I want to remove.
  • Remove the 3 old drives from any shares they were included in.
  • Take screen shot of my current drive assignments.
  • Stop array then go to Tools – New Config – Retain current Config – Apply.
  • Unassign the 3 drives I want to remove.
  • Unassign current SMR parity drive.
  • Assign the new non SMR as parity drive
  • Assign old SMR parity drive as a data drive.
  • Don’t click check box for Parity is valid.
  • Start the array.
  • Wait for parity to build.
