pfSense on unRAID, very slow internet upload?

So in my quest to virtualize all the things I decided to put another NIC in my server, plug my Modem directly to that card and attempted to setup pfSense.

I isolated the NIC so unRAID wouldn't use it and then setup pfSense using a modified Free BSD template.

Once installed I can, using VNC assign the NIC that I have the modem on to the WAN, and then assign the Virtual Bridged NIC device to LAN.

I then do the basic setup in pfSense (I have done it countless times over the years) and find that I get a faster download (like 2Mbps faster) but my upload is like on average .04 Mbps up.

I pay for a 30/2Mbps connection.

When I put the old pfSense box back in place, reboot the modem because it holds on the MAC of the last thing it was plugged into then My internet speeds are back.

 

I want all the traffice to go threw the unRAID server's virtual Switch to get to the pfSense install.

I'm using Balancing Mode 6 ALB as I have 4 connections going to my regular network switch.

 

Am I doing something wrong or should I be doing something different?

I run pfsense in a vm. I don't use a virtual bridge to the lan but instead have a 4 port intel card isolated in the server. The Modem cable goes in one port and the lan out to my lb4m switch for network usage. I thought it might be a tad bit "safer" not having the outside world only be a virtual network connection away from my private network via the server. So now, it mimics an independent firewall. I read a little about this on the pfsense forums, and there seems to be a split decision about if it matters or not. Many big companies run virtual nics for lans, but they also don't do it on inexpensive hardware, nor probably use pfsense to do it.

 

I used the base freebsd template. My xml is

edit: vm is currently running, so it has added attributes in it vs not running.

 

 

I don't think I modified anything in the xml except to remove the hyperthead topology of the cores

 

 

I pay for a 75/10 and usually hit 85/15.

Makes me wonder if I should start considering a Dual LAN Card.

I wonder if using the virtual bridge is causing issues, beyond that it works fine, heck I get better speeds on the download than I do on my old box.

I only get 29/29.5 on the old pfSense box and 32-33 down on the unRaid VM, upload is obviously broke though ;'(

It's "cleaner" but requires 1 extra ethernet cable. Which is really no big deal. 

 

I also have a small e-machines computer setup as a backup firewall that I use when I take down the array/server for whatever reason. That way I keep network connectivity. This would be partially mitigated if unRaid allowed vm's to stay mounted after the initial array start (which would keep the current key registration check/method intact.)
