X299 compatibility Work VM Gaming VM and Linux VM Evaluating

Recommended Posts

I have never used unraid in the past. But I am trying to figure out if it would help in my case I am looking at building a new PC. I currently have a bunch of electronics test equipment all over my desk and office because of this I am low on room. I also work from home and they require a dedicated PC which they monitor VMs are ok. So I was thinking if instead of having my server my gaming PC and my work pc fill my office giving me no room to work. I was thinking of using unraid. Having one VM for work one for playing/streaming and one for a random game server. Would this be possible? Would this help in my situation. Does it cost per year/month? or is it a one time charge. I already know I am going x299 which may or may not yet be optimized for unraid.

I wouldn't opt into the new Intel platform because of multiple reasons, first of which are extreme issues with motherboards:

  • 8-pin power for the CPU is not enough for 10-core Skylake-X, pulls over 300w
  • VRMs on the "entry-level" $300+ boards overheat and cause CPU to clock down to 1.2Ghz
  • Would recommend water-cooling for the VRMs
  • Doesn't recommend any X299 boards at the moment and to wait a few months

Yeah I just got a free i9 from a friend which is why I was going to go x299. I was debating using that or threadripper.
