Since using Server board, only PCIe x8, can I connect x16 Video card for Gaming?

Recommended Posts

Hi all.  I'm using Supermicro X9SCM-F serverboard, and it only has PCIe x8 slots.  I wanted to try gaming, moonlight streaming, hence I bought a PCIe x16 video card, Zotac GTX 1050 mini.  Will it run?  I know there might be minimal lost in performance, but I read somewhere that it's not really that big, given my board supports PCIe 3.0.

Will it run?

Yes it will work - I am running the same board and have a GTX960 passed through to my windows VM for Gaming which works fine for Elite Dangerous and Fallout 4 etc. Not tried streaming games etc though.

You just need to decide how you are going to make it fit - cut the back off the slot, cut the gfx card or get an adaptor.
