fschris
What are your thoughts on this one? https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C236_C232/X11SAE-M.cfm Im not really doing any kind of VM addons just yet.... What processor should I go with and Memory. Primary purpose is to serve my KODI htpc with movies and High Res music. Edited April 8, 2017 by fschris Quote Link to comment
fschris
Seems like Intel LGA 1151 chips are kinda pricey!!! now that I am looking... Quote Link to comment
ashman70
Depends on what you call 'pricey' what were you expecting? Quote Link to comment
tdallen
If you are serving Kodi, e.g. a client that doesn't need transcoding, then a Xeon would be overkill. You could get away with an i3 or Pentium for basic NAS duties. Quote Link to comment
fschris
thanks tdallen... Quote Link to comment
fschris
Does anyone see an issue with the processor and Mother board not working? https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C236_C232/X11SAE-M.cfm and https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117732 I bought the memory that was listed and I still cant get the Mobo to POST, BIOS, Beeps etc ,,,, absolutely nothing. The MB was an OPEN BOX from new egg. I just had them issue me RMA and replacement. Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
Kabylake on X11 requires bios 2.0, it's probably still on an older bios, you need to use a Skylake CPU to update the bios. I just recently bough an X11SSM-F and had to do the same. Quote Link to comment
fschris
i can only upgrade the BIOS with the correct CPU? Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
If it's not on bios 2.0 it will only boot with a Skylake CPU, if it had IPMI you could use it to update, although you'd need to pay Supermicro for a key. Quote Link to comment
fschris
Damn.... what is the cheapest skylake i could use??? Grrrr. what a PITA! Quote Link to comment
fschris
probably this one... i can order on amazon and then return it Intel Intel Celeron G3900 Skylake Quote Link to comment
fschris
okay, i just ordered a i3 skylake ... so that hopefully will get my up and running. i will use my kaby lake i3 for a HTPC upgrade Quote Link to comment
fschris
Awesome... everything booted right up with the sky lake CPU awesome. Unraid came right up on the new system. No issues. Amazing. Love unraid and the community. Quote Link to comment
Sphinkx
Hmm. So if you buy a Kaby Lake proc with an X11 SuperMicro board you first have to use another proc to have it working? Is that with all the X11 board? Quote Link to comment

Sphinkx
True. But if you buy an X11 board you don't really know if you are on r2.0 or not? You can ask but the company selling it will not always know. Quote Link to comment

That's true, if you get one from old stock you'll need to update the bios, it's the same for all Skylake boards, not just Supermicro X11, in time most should come with latest bios. Sphinkx
But I was unaware of that. Thanks. Was planning on buying an X11 board in the near future. But I am still considering other set-ups. But I will check with my supplier to know if they are delivering with the latest bios. If not I need to have it updated.. Quote Link to comment
