Disks always spun up - how to determine culprit

Recommended Posts

My disks are constantly spun up.  Possible culprits: (1)  I am running CrashPlan inn a docker with 3 PCs backing up to my server and the server backing up to Crashplan's cloud;  (2)  I'm running a Ubuntu VM with scheduled backups of a mysql database and daily cron jobs backing up Newznab files via rsync. Any thoughts on determining what's keeping the disk spun up?

My snide comment would be--- Why won't your disks always be active?  But a bit more serious, I would tend to suspect that the backup to the cloud would be the prime suspect since upload speeds are usually just a fraction of the download speeds.  You could try suspending/stopping each of these and see what happens.
