Updates and Driver errors on win 10 VM

Hi All 

 

I just upgraded my motherboard and CPU 

from AMD phenom ii X4 965 BE with Asus M5A97 LE r2.0  ( Radeon 6870 for passthrough)

to Intel i7 4790k with Z97 -a  ( EVGA GTX 970 sc for pass through )

 

 

Once i swapped all the hardware and got unraid back online. I decided to blow out my old win10 VM and create a new one.  Followed all neccesarry steps From Johns videos and guides. with no issues. Until it was time to update windows to 1607. this refuses to install keeps failing after 5 attempts. once the update fails it asks for a restart then I get BSOD. it reboots again and is able to log in to windows.  

 

what I have tried.

a. passthrough (intel i7 4790k)

b. Hyper V (yes/no)

c. PCI-E acs override (yes/no)

d.  Core 0/5 and Core 0/2/5/6

e. i440fx 2.7

f.  Bios settings for IGD are set to primary 

 

I am also not able to update to the current(stable) Nvidia driver for my 970. This also keeps failing halfway through the install. could the windows update issue be causing the nvidia driver not to install? My concern for all this began when i was getting audio studder on PLEX and KODI. It is a brief 2 second glitch (sounds like a cd skipping) then goes a way hapeens about one or twice during a movie. My assumption was to update to latest nvidia driver to fix it. Never had these issues with Radeon 6870...

try booting with 1 cpu, updating windows, let it reboot, update nvidia, then shutdown, add cores back, then reboot.

Well Setting only core 0 on the win 10 vm seemed to do the trick. i was able to update to 1607 as well as install latest Nvidia Gforce drivers.  

 

my only concern is, why is this happening and what will happen with future updates..... 

 

Once everything was updated I re set my VM to 6 cores and 8gb ram, rebooted and began to install Open PHT and KODI Krypton. Something still seems off. functionality works great overall. light years better operation than my old AMD setup.  however i cant seem to exit any of these applications. once i exit the screen frezzes and task manager shows KOdi/opht not responding...  

 

I  am at the point now of maybe rebuilding this VM. Am i missing something here? could it be that some of my vm settings are wrong ??

Settings look fine except that the VirtIO drivers you are using might be a little out of date.  You can download new drivers directly from the webGui under the Settings > VM Manager tab.  Simply select the newest version from the drop down and then click the download button.  You will then need to edit your VM to specify the use of that new VirtIO ISO and then once booted into Windows, go to each of the existing VirtIO devices in device manager, right click, then check for updates.  Then specific the VirtIO ISO path (typically d:\ or e:\) as the path and let it auto-find the drivers.  This may improve things a bit.

I went ahead and rebuilt the vm with lastest stable   virtio-win-0.1.126-2.iso. I also downloaded the latest win10.iso form MS. Everything is working perfect now. dident need to select only core 0 for the updates to work. runs fast and stable. here are the settings i used hopefully they are okay.

This may be off topic but any chance for a future prepackaged Plex home theater or plex media player  VM? so that i can add a logitech harmony ultimate remote to my home theater setup and control it all with the remote?? the other option would be to use LibreElec pre packaged vm. I wonder if the logitech harmony remote will operate the libreelec vm with kodi client.??????
