FINALLY GOING TO BUILD 60TB

Recommended Posts

HI ALL,

Finally i am going to build this server. Some of the specs are below. I need help in the motherboard section and processor, as far as the case is concerned and the Power Supply see below.

My intention is to build this to 60TB as of right now due to my circumstances of moving states / jobs, I am going to only start with 3 drives. Once i figure where i am going to be settled then the real fun begins. My main use for the server is going to be raw storage, (lets just say my wife loves her camera to much on vacation, and averages 2000 photos a week no joke). We both have Ipads and the Iphone so I would like the Plex app ability, as i am going to be away for three weeks I would like to also like to have IMPI features, i know there is another feature similar to IPMI just not sure. Please see below for the PSU, Case, Flash Drive, HD i am going to use. Any suggestion on the motherboard and processor are greatly appreciated. I would like the i3 but it is very pricey.

Case-

ThermalTake Mozart TX- Currently already have one for my home computer (Problem is i cannot seem to find another case like this anywhere, i need suggestions) May have to build my own ;(

HD- TBD Upon recommendations and pricing

Location of Build- CA

Main Use- Streaming, file storage and back up of all the home pc's/tablets.

Cost- TBD prefer to build small for now as i will possibly be moving soon.

Any suggestions will help, greatly appreciate it.

Thank you

I WILL BE USING THIS HARD DRIVE FOR BOTH PARITY AND CACHE

Waaay overkill for unRAID.  Most MB/CPUs will stream HD to multiple clients. Read rates are more than sufficient. Your network will play the biggest factor. If you are transcoding, get plenty of memory and a powerful CPU ie i3 or greater.

There is a link to HD streaming testing that was completed somewhere here...

As for system specs I'm getting along just fine with a small buget build. You can see my specs in my signature.

As for streams I don't per say transcode on the fly, but I do have several hundred movies and tv shows ripped to Xvid, Dvix, MKV and they all stream perfectly on all my machines at the same time. I think at one time I had at least (5) 720P video streams going at the same time.

Now if your talking a Mac I'm guessing you are going to encode to either MP4 or M4V unless you plan on using VLC or something of the sort to watch file formats. I've watched 1080P MKV's on my Mac streaming with out a glitch. As a matter of fact Avatar looked amazing on my 27" Mac. ;)

On a side note I am currently ripping all of my videos from various formats with HandBrake to M4V on to another drive on my unRAID so I can either take them with me on my iPad, iPhone or my kids iTouch.

As for your question does Mac play well with unRAID? Yes there are several member/users here using Macs with unRAID. Its the main reason why I decided to give a Mac a try. I figured if others have no issues I'm sure I wont either. Works amazingly well with my Windows machines so a Mac was nearly a shoe in.
