  1. After the parity process, the same drive's Unallocated sector count had risen to 409. Not a complaint from the other drive which is of a similar vintage. I stopped the array and created a new config excluding the problematic drive. Undergoing another parity build now. Will figure out what to do with that one drive after - might pull it out and stick in an enclosure for a separate backup of the essential data.
  2. I've taken my 2-bay Synology offline (planning to sell it) and moved the two drives from it into my unRaid box. After the clearing process, one of them has a reported number of reallocated sectors; from what I've read it is suggestive that the drive may be degrading and is a candidate for replacement. Since I put the drive into the unRaid box the number hasn't changed. I can remove it from the array as there isn't any data on it (and I'm not hurting for the loss of the 3TB). Should I plan to replace the drive? It is a WD Red 3TB with plenty of warranty on it still. The other drive is from the same batch, purchased at the same time, and doesn't have any reported issues.
  3. Do you folks do your managing via the server setup? I like to use the Calibre desktop app to do management, then sync to a /media/ebooks share on unRaid, even though it adds a step.
  4. Conversely, if you need a bunch of drives but in a compact case, look at the Fractal Node 304. Holds up to 6 HDDs and at least a couple SSDs. Used that case in my recent build and am quite pleased with how little space it takes up. Now have to balance drive quantity vs drive size, as currently have 4x 3TB WD Reds, one going for parity.
  5. Might I inquire as to how you use Calibre, e.g. via the desktop application or the docker'd server setup? Been using the former, been thinking of trying the latter to get the library off my main PC.
  6. 4x 3TB WD Red drives, one for parity, room for two more drives 2x 250GB Samsung SSDs for cache pool Little less than half of the available space is in use. Backed up my own DVDs, use Plex Docker to stream to my XBox/TV. Don't download media unless purchased. Trying out some Docker'd applications for utilities, backups etc. Already using a backup share to backup my main PC.
  7. I found that clicking on the clock icon and adjoining text before the comment count also goes to the latest post in the thread. It's a slightly wider click target, but still not very tall.

    First Build

I recently did a build using that same case and CPU, using the ASRock C236 mobo. An interesting thing is that the case can take 6 HDDs in the brackets, and has room for SSDs (for cache) on top of that. What I did was to install the SSDs on the outside of the leftmost and rightmost drive brackets - there's enough space between the bracket and side of the case, and there are holes for the screws. Makes for a mess of cables, which I'd like to tidy up some. I also recommend using a SFX PSU rather than a standard size, and modular too. The case is cozy enough with a Corsair SF450 unit in it, I can't fathom working with a full-size PSU or non-modular cables in there.
  9. I've been debating this myself. I have 1 parity and 3 data HDDs, plus 2 SSDs for cache, with room for two more HDDs. It's a bit of a low ratio, but I've been leaning towards adding a second parity drive just for that extra safety. I do have another backup on a 2-bay Synology of my most important data, so I have that as well, but I'd really like to take measures to avoid having to fall back on that, hence the second parity.
  10. Hard drive, memory, and flash prices are on the rise this year due to high demand and not enough supply. Buy now.
  11. How is the Silverstone adapter cable holding up? Is it an adapter cable off a molex cable off the PSU? I've been looking at options for molex-sata adapters but they seem poorly regarded as tending to melt or catch fire.
  12. STOP!!!! What you said here is very scary! A SATA cable just connects a single disk to a single SATA port, but you are talking about a cable to power multiple disks. It sounds like you are planning to use a power cable from Corsair on a Silverstone power supply. They are very likely to not be pin compatible and you can fry your disks! *edit* sent user a PM about this. *edit2* Nevermind . I see he is using a Corsair PSU with a Silverstone bracket, not a Silverstone PSU. It's still an issue that needs to be investigated, unless he ordered specifically for his PSU model number. I've seen cables from the same brand pinned differently depending on who was the manufacturer of the specific model in question. Yes, not all brands manufacture their own stuff, and will source from different manufacturers for different models over the years. If the cable didn't come in the box with the PSU, I'd definitely ohm it out with a multimeter to verify pin for pin compatibility. I saw the same PSU and cable combo recommended elsewhere, and I verified via the Corsair website as well (the PSU is a type 3, and the cable is marked compatible with all Corsair's type-3 PSUs). Amended my post to include links and some formatting for clarity.

Your message gave me a brief panic moment until I re-read what I had written previously and saw the possible confusion. I updated my post to include links and some formatting so the important bits are easier to pick out. I did check out the cable compatibility before I used it, and I saw the combo recommended in a few places as well.
  14. I've just done a fresh build in this case. Two firsts for me, building in this case and using unRaid. Both are so far so good. I used a Corsair SF450 PSU with the Silverstone adapter bracket (PP08B) (Corsair apparently doesn't include the brackets with SF PSUs, and the mounting is supposedly standard so I just got the Silverstone since it was cheap). The PSU's 24-pin cable was *just* long enough to get plugged into the motherboard. I also found that the included SATA power cable is not nearly long enough to connect more than a couple of drives. So I ordered one of Corsair's longer compatible modular cables (CP-8920113) which now powers 3 HDDs and 1 SSD. Have another on the way so I can eventually max out the storage space. I can already see how tricky it can be to run cables in this case, esp. if a tower cooler is used (I used a low-profile Noctua) or a GPU (not needed for a headless machine). I'm probably going to revisit the cabling and try to tidy it up some.
