  1. I got the same error - SYSLINUX 3.72 2008-09-05 EBIOS Load error - boot error - and so came across this thread. I checked the USB drive by copying the files from it to the hard drive on my laptop. No issues, so it seems like my USB drive is OK from a hardware perspective. I then re-ran make_bootable.bat and that got me past the original error, and the server made it further in its boot sequence, but now I get this error: Decompressing Linux... uncompression error -- System halted Any ideas?
  2. So to recap, drive 1 (parity) and drives 2-5 (data) work fine when in my server's 1-5 bays. Inserting drives 6-8 (additional data drives) into bays 6-8 (I tried every combination, eg all three drives in together, one drive only in, etc) causes the server to fail to boot up (it stalls out as captured in the picture above). I tried reinstalling unRAID and the problem is the same. I pulled drive 5 (confirmed working from existing configuration) from bay 5 (confirmed working from existing configuration) and the server started up fine, noting that drive 5 was missing. I tried booting up the server with drive 5 in bay 6, and the server booted up fine, though of course I could not add drive 5 to the array because there was a drive missing from bay 6. Since bay 5 works just fine with drive 5, I then tried adding drives 6-8 (one at a time) into bay 5 - each time the presence of one of these drives (6- rather than drive 5 in bay 5 caused the server to fail to boot. Eventually I will need 4 more drives (in addition to drives 6- in order to take advantage of the available bays in my server, so seeing as somehow the new drives 6-8 don't seem to be playing nice with my server the way drives 1-5 do, I went ahead and ordered a Seagate Barracuda 2TB drive to see if this helps things, though I am not too optimistic about this, since drives 1-5 are the exact same model as drives 6-8 (WD20EARS).
  3. Raj, Thanks for the tips. Actually it's funny, I think I may have been one of your first customers at Greenleaf, if not the first (I dealt with Stephen). Anyways, I am using a wired keyboard using the PS/2 connection. And I checked on the boot priority issue - went into the BIOS and it still is set to boot from the USB drive. dgaschk, The server has 12 bays, with the top 5 being used (1 parity, 4 data). As for the other 2 questions, Raj might know better than me! :-)
  4. Well, tried reinstalling unRAID as you suggested. Good news is, I did this successfully, and when I went to the "Devices" tab, I saw that the server recognized my 5 drives (1 parity and 4 data) and was able to assign them as I had when I first configured the server. Bad news is, even when the server booted up (with just the same 5 drives that worked before), it still hung up and the end of the boot process and failed to give me a command prompt. Undeterred, I decided to go ahead and try to add drives - but same thing as before - the server hangs up and fails to boot. It doesn't get to the blue boot screen - in fact it seems to fail at the "Initializing RAID Component" stage. Since I can't access the command prompt in order to generate a syslog, I took a picture of the screen where the boot process fails: All 5 of the drives that work as well as the 3 that I am trying to add are WD20EARS drives - if I've read the materials correctly, I should not be messing with these drives despite all the posts re: them. This is what I did with the first 5 drives - I installed them in their bays and unRAID recognized them with no problem (as it did this evening). But thought it might be worth mentioning. Any other ideas?
  5. Understood, and believe me, I went through the forum and FAQ and understand that a syslog would be ideal. But since I can't get to the command prompt, I'm not sure how to accomplish this.
  6. I purchased a 12 bay unRAID server to use solely as NAS for a buy Boxee Box. With one drive used for the parity drive and the other 11 with 2TB drives, that would give me 22TB of storage. I started with just 4 data drives for a total of 8TB of storage. I've run out of space and need to add drives. But my server does not want to accept any new drives. I'm stuck with just the parity drive and the 4 data drives. Why do I call this the Jekyll / Hyde server? Because it works as NAS storage - start it up, and the files are all there and accessible on my network (both by my Boxee Box as well as my computer). So in that sense, it works great. On the other hand, the server is all screwed up when it comes to the interface. When I first got the server, I would get the tower login prompt. Now I don't get it unless I press ENTER after the startup sequence, which ends with the following: Starting Samba: /usr/sbin/nmbd -D /usr/sbin/nmbd -D So it wouldn't be a big deal hitting ENTER to get to the login prompt, but even once I get there, I type with my keyboard and nothing shows up on the screen. Then once I hit ENTER, the characters show up, but no matter how many times I type "root" and hit ENTER (with no characters showing up on screen until after the fact), I can't get to the command prompt. Again, I could care less accessing the command prompt since my needs for this server are so simple (just NAS for my Boxee), but when I try to add drives, the same Mr. Hyde behavior rears its ugly head... OK get ready: I first tried adding 3 new drives into bays 6-8 on the server. This caused the server to fail to boot up at all. Hmm OK... I then tried just adding a single drive unto bay 6. OK, now the server boots up, but nothing shows up in the web management page (it just shows my 4 data drives). If I put the single new drive into bay 7, it won't start up. Same thing when I try drive bays 8-12. Any ideas?
  7. Well server didn't seem to be doing much other than spinning fans, at least I couldn't get any indication that anything was going on, so I powered down the server, restarted my computer and browser, etc., and the parity-check is still in progress... and I can click refresh and see the progress, which has me happy... Estimated time left is about 4 hours so we'll see how it goes...
  8. This is my first unRAID server (or any server for that matter), so I am looking for a little help here. I have a 12-bay server and am starting up with five 2TB drives. Got all the drives in, recognized and assigned last night. Formatted the drives and everything went fine. unRAID then wanted me to perform a parity sync on the drives, which I did. During the formatting and parity sync, I hit "refresh" every so often to monitor progress. The parity sync indicated that it would take approx. 9 hours and so with it getting late, I went to sleep with the parity sync at about 6% complete. When I woke up this morning, I pressed refresh on my web browser in order to check status. This time, my browser could not find the server. As I was adding drives last night, I found that for some reason my browser would not find the server unless I restarted my computer and the browser. OK maybe this is not accurate, but that did work to fix the problem. Maybe something else would have solved it, but I did find that simply refreshing my browser would not allow me to access the server when I made drive changes and had rebooted the server. Thinking this might be happening again, I restarted my computer and my browser. Still can't access the server. Looked in Network Places and the server is not listed. Even when I was having trouble accessing the server via my browser (see above), it always showed up in my Network Places (but not now). Being a little hasty this morning, I figured I would restart the server by pressing the power button on the front. That didn't do anything, the server is still on, fans blowing etc. That never happened before (server failing to respond to power button). When I was having my browser difficulties last night, I did a little disconnecting/reconnecting of the ethernet cable to the server. It was easy to determine when the server would lose/regain network connection, because I would hear the server beep. I could also see the difference at the Tower Login" screen when typing "root" followed by the command "ifconfig eth0". Now when I disconnect/reconnnect the ethernet cable, no beep. Just the server's fans blowing. Finally, now when I type "root" at the "Tower Login" prompt, I get a password prompt. This never happened to me prior to the parity sync, and I did not change any password settings. I tried just hitting enter at the password prompt, but it's telling me that my login is incorrect. Because I can't get past "Tower Login" I can't post a syslog. This is about all the info I have to offer. For now I guess I will just leave the server running but whereas I was feeling pretty good about the process when I was able to monitor progress via my browser, now it seems like my server is just frozen given its lack of response.
  9. Thanks for all the helpful info. I think I am definitely going to pass on the build-my-own solution. So when I see your Greenleaf 12 bay server has 4 SATA cables, does that mean each connects to 3 drives? I'm good to go with that box (I see that it includes unRAID on the USB stick) and the 12 WD20EARS drives (I get 10% off Amazon and they are just $79.99 there so will just slap them in the box myself).
  10. Yes, I suppose I read it just a little too quickly. And obviously I am a complete NOOB. Basically I am looking for a media server to use with a Boxee Box on a single HDTV. That's it, no other uses, end of story. My plan is to buy a server box, 12 WD20EARS drives, plug it into my network with the Boxee Box, dump my media files into the server from my laptop (I know this will be painfully slow) and go from there. I'm willing to wade through the various FAQ's and post to figure out how to get unRAID to work on the server, configure folders, etc., but as a complete and utter NOOB to all this (I am replacing a Escient Fireball system which controls three Sony ES 400 DVD changers), what would I need in addition to the 12 drive Eco Build? 8 more SATA cables to handle all 12 drives? Anything else? Yes, like I said, total NOOB here.
  11. The Lime Technology website shows all servers out of stock, both the RB-1200 all three models of the MD-1510. There is a note dated January 18, 2010 on the website's font page titled "Getting Caught Up with Server Orders," but it's three months later and wondering if there is an update to this.
