  1. Thank you both for confirming that the supermicro is a solid choice, I knew it was I just have a habit of getting carried away and going far beyond my needs! Haha I haven't planned much in the way of VMs for my server but that may change as I learn more however the E3 should serve my planned usage of plex transcoding, media server, sab, sonarr, cp, hesdphones etc quite well. As for the AsRock Rack mobos I did look for those but haven't had much luck sourcing them in Australia
  2. Hey there guys I have started gathering parts for my unraid build however the only component I am not 100% set on so far is the motherboard. I am currently looking at the Supermicro X10SL7-F Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard to pair with my Xeon E3-1231v3 but given the price/possible overkill wanted to check if there were any alternative recommendations to this board. IPMI is a requirement as I want to run it headless and I need enough SATA ports for 6 drives + cache with possibility to handle a total of 12 drives if I end up filling my Node 804. With the SAS ports of the x10SL7-F I would have more ports than I need however the only other supermicro I could find in Australia was the Supermicro X10SLM-F-O which only has a total of 6 SATA ports. If anyone has any suggestions I would be happy to hear them even if it is to convince me that the X10SL7-F is the option I should go with so I can be confident before I make the investment. Thanks in advance, James
  3. I've been finding it hard to source a PC-Q25 here in Aus for a reasonable price What is everyone's opinion on the PC-Q26?
  4. Very expensive especially with our dollar dropping. Oh thank you very much! I really had no clue what ram/how much would be best suited but your advice should save me some $$ on ram Pc part picker seems to think it supports registered, i know it supports unbuffered ECC as that was what i was originally planning to get. Again i wasn't sure how large the cache drive should be so thought 1tb SSD would be safe but I'd rather get something much smaller as it is quite expensive and 500gb ones are on sale here at the moment. Price per gb the cheapest reds are the 3TB however i was tossing up between spending more and getting a single 6TB red and adding as required or getting the a bunch of 3TB. Do you mean a larger parity drive?
  5. Hey everyone! Keen to be part of the unRAID community and get my first decent setup going. This thing will basically be a media server running Plex, sonarr, couchpotato, etc. I wanted to have the processing power to be able to handle all transcoding that plex needs to do as well as have a bit of headroom in case I want/learn of a new way to utilise unRAID that requires a decent CPU. I want to slowly add drives as needed/buy them from different batches and being able to expand is a key concern. I'd rather put together a decent build first go rather than need to upgrade later however if anything I have selected is overkill or unnecessary or there are better options please feel free to share your opinion on what should be changed I look forward to hearing your feedback and hopefully I can finalise a parts list and order this bad boy CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($369.00 @ Centre Com) Motherboard: Supermicro X10SL7-F Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($489.00 @ Scorptec) Memory: Crucial 16GB (1 x 16GB) Registered DDR3-1866 Memory ($213.88 @ RamCity) Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 1TB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($475.00 @ Centre Com) Storage: Western Digital Red 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive ($159.00 @ PLE Computers) Storage: Western Digital Red 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive ($159.00 @ PLE Computers) Storage: Western Digital Red 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive ($159.00 @ PLE Computers) Storage: Western Digital Red 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive ($159.00 @ PLE Computers) Storage: Western Digital Red 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive ($159.00 @ PLE Computers) Case: Fractal Design Define R5 (Titanium) ATX Mid Tower Case ($169.00 @ IJK) Power Supply: SeaSonic X Series 400W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully-Modular Fanless ATX Power Supply ($179.00 @ CPL Online) Total: $2689.88 Link here: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/qZcbmG
  6. In regards to using a modular power supply there was a note on the website I was going to order this same case from that said "Note: most modular PSUs will have issues fitting this unit. Due to the minimal space between the PSU and HDD cage, most modular cables from the PSU simply won't fit. Please consider this when looking to purchase; a non-modular PSU with a maximum depth of 17cm is best." Just something to keep in mind when selecting PSU
  7. Hey there! I'm actually in the process of planning my first unRAID build and am currently trying to decide on some form of SFF case. I originally was looking at a Fractal Design Node 804 as I liked that it can fit 10 drives and the aesthetics would allow it to blend in nicely in my apartment. However it has no hot swaps and I keep looking at that PC-Q25 but as always I'm indecisive. What is it like to build in? Would you recommend it for a first time build just looking for around 5-6 drives all up As you stated about noise that was one of my main concerns when I was looking at the PC-Q25 but I'm sure with some decent fans it'd be much quieter? Any advice from your experiences with the case would be much appreciated Thanks, James
