  1. So it's been years since I've been on here b/c my Unraid server has been running like a champ. I've finally used up my 3.5TB of space and am ready to add more drives and possibly upgrade the software and try out the cache drive option. After doing some research I read I should not be on a beta install for when I swap my 500GB parity drive for a 1TB. So I went looking for 4.3 final and can't find it. The "oldest" version on the site is 4.7. Can I just upgrade directly to 4.7? I did purchase the "Pro" license way back when. My usb drive is only 128mb though, is that going to be a problem? I'm just serving movies up to media players and don't need any other fancy apps on it. Just read through some of the cache drive threads and it looks easy to implement. We only turn the server on when I backup movies to it or when we want to watch moves. I saw that the mover script can be modified, can it be set to start transferring a file as soon as it's done being moved to the cache drive or should I just set it to run every 30min? Thanks in advance! Jeremiah
  2. I realize that it's not going to be plug and play and your first page of directions only scare me a little bit, but I understand 95% of it. I was just looking for someone to say it is possible with a bit of work or MythTV uses XYZ which is completely incompatable with unraid/slackware. But since you said it should all work eventually I'll give it a go. I need to learn more about linux anyway Thanks, J
  3. BubbaQ, Any chance you would want to try to install a MythTV backend on your unraid / slackware box? Here's a link on how someone else set it up on Slackware 12.1 http://www.mnspace.net/articles/mythtv-slack12.1.html If I could get a Myth backend running on my unraid box that would be great. I don't need that box to output HD or anything like that. I have modified XBOX's running XBMC to act as my front end. My next question is, how difficult would it be to "upgrade" my current Unraid box to run on the full Slackware distro? I currently have 8 x 500GB HD's in there that are all around 50% full. I could easily add another small IDE disk as the boot drive. Is it possible to do it fairly easily or would it be better to start from scratch with aSlackware install and then add on Unraid and add in my discs? If you can get MythTV running on the same box as Unraid I'm going to pick up a new cheap box and get started out on it myself. I'd try it myself now but I'm fairly new to linux so I'm afraid I wouldn't know where to start. Thanks, J
  4. If you get unraid running on a full version of slackware then just follow http://www.mnspace.net/articles/mythtv-slack12.1.htmlthis page to get mythtv installed on Slackware. All I want is the mythtv backend running on my unraid server so I don't have to have 2 24x7 boxes running. I can use the mythweb to schedule the recordings, and my unraid box (with my HDHomeRun attached) can record the show and trascode to whatever format so I can stream them to my xbox running xbmc. I have no need to watch live tv thru the myth box. Has anyone tried this? If I had a spare box I try setting it all up since I have a second license for unraid. Let me know. I'd really like to have the 2 together. J
  5. Sorry I should have been more clear. Speed is definitely not the issure. My RedHat box is a brand spanking new government issued HP desktop with the latest release of RedHat. What was happening was the commands weren't acting the same at all. h,j,k,l were not moving the cursor as they should, x and X were not deleting, it was weird. But like I said, MC worked great so I'll just keep using that. Thanks again. J
  6. So I actually had to do some stuff with vi today at work and it wasn't that bad (for basic editing), I did have a cheat sheet, but I got it done. So I came home today ready to edit my go script to get the faster speed and vi didn't act at all like it did at work. Now at work I was on a RedHat machine and here at home I'm on a windows machine working thru telnet. But thanks to Joe L. I used midnight commander and got it done! Thanks for the good directions Joe, b/c I did have to do the Esc + # to do the commands like you said. Since you guys like talking about this soo much, tell me why it acted so differently on telnet vs my RedHat machine. Thanks! J
  7. how is everyone editing the "go" file on the flash drive? Are you text editing over telnet or just opening the file from network explorer? Thanks! J
  8. I've had my unraid server up and running for a couple weeks now with no problems. I'm starting to learn linux, scripting, etc at work and we use nedit. I've tried to use vi but the commands to do anything are a pain! How do I install nedit so it is my default text editor on my unraid box. I want to add a weekly cron that backs up my really important stuff (pics of the kids) to an external usb hard drive. I figured out how to mount a usb key and write to it last night (thanks to this site) so that problem is out of the way. In summary, how do I install nedit? I'm very new to linux so I'll have to be walked thru most, if not all of it. Thanks! J
  9. Jim, I'm going to be assembling everything this weekend and hopefully get it up and running. 1) Are you using version 4.3-beta3 or 4.3-beta5? 2) Did you have to change much/anything on the mobo (jumpers/bios settings) when you set it up? 3) Should I start off with all the hard drives hooked up or just 3 since I'll start off with the free version of unraid just to get it configured. 4) You didn't happen to buy a 2 pack of the Pro key that I could buy the second code off of you ($100)? Thanks in advance for the help! Jeremiah
  10. Sweetness! I was just putting my order together on NewEgg and I had picked out the Masscool PCI card also, glad to hear it works. I'll be using the Intel Celeron 430 Conroe-L 1.8GHz for my CPU and I just ordered a Corsair 550 PSU. Thanks for the quick reply! J
  11. What cpu are you using? Did you run into any glitches during install and setup? I've been searching for an mATX board since there are no more P5B-VM DO mobo's available. Are you only using the 4 SATA ports or do you have more drives and how do you have them hooked up to the mobo? Sorry for all the questions, but I just got my XBOX working (xbmc) and need to get all my movies on this server ASAP. thanks, J
  12. So are there any other boards that have know good gigE ports, microATX from factor and can support 8 Sata 2 drives around $100??? I was actually ready to order the P5B-VM DO and like the OP I can't find it anywhere other than ebay and I'd rather not take my chances.. Thanks, J
  13. Thanks for the response JRS, I kept seeing that mobo in all the reading I've been doing but kept going past it since it was $100. I never realized it had 8 SATA2 ports. It actually looks like there are 7 internal ports and one e-sata external port, is that correct? So do I just run an e-sata to sata cable from the outside to the inside to hook up my last drive? I really do want to find out if I can access my unraid box from the web. Read only would be great for my parents, but if I could also upload pics to it when we're on vacation that would be even better! Thanks again! J
  14. Here's what I'm planning on getting... BUDGET is the key word here, other than the case (I wanted one that looked good, with room to expand) Case: $80 shipped, Thermaltake Case M9 http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=CA-VI1KBNS Room for 3 of the next item down HD Cages: $36 shipped for 2, 4 into 3 cage with 120mm fan http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811999169 PS: $35 shipped, Earthwatts EA380 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371005 CPU: $42 shipped, Celeron 430 http://www.clubit.com/product_detail.cfm?itemno=CA1938257&cmp=AFC-CJ_CBIT 4-Port Sata2 Controller Card: $57, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816102062 HD: I have 6 x 500GB SATA2 drives RAM: I have a 1GB stick of HP DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) QUESTIONS: 1) I need a good/CHEAP mobo that will support this CPU, at least 4 sata2 ports (use controller card for other 4), gigE and onboard video. Prefer to be less than $60. 2) Will this PSU handle at least 8 x 500GB drives? I don't see myself going beyond 8 drives anytime soon. 3) With unRAID, can my parents log into this box over the web (password and login) and look at pics of my kids I've set in a certain folder?? (This is the biggest requirement and the entire reason I started researching NAS, unraid, etc...) 4) Is unRAID the entire OS or just an application, do I need an OS (like Ubuntu) installed on this machine also? 5) Tell me why I shouldn't use FreeNAS... Thanks for your time! J P.S. Iif you know where I can get any of this stuff cheaper let me know!
