  1. Hello again Frank, Well, I'm up and running with version 6.3.3, all data intact and currently running a parity check. Everything went really smooth except I couldn't get the server to boot at first, I kept getting a failed to run syslinux.c32 error. I re-formatted the usb to FAT instead of FAT32 and that fixed it. Now its time to swap out some of my older/smaller drives. Thanks again, Gary T
  2. Hi Frank, thanks for the quick response. Normally I always upgrade to keep thing up to date, but since I hadn't been using the server for a bit I got lazy, mistake #1, mistake #2 was trying to upgrade without doing my proper research. Luckily I did take a picture of the drive layout, so I do know the serial numbers and drive placement. I'll tell you my server build and maybe you can tell me if I should upgrade anything and what I need to do first to safely switch to version 6. I believe both the motherboard and the processor are both 64 bit compatible. The processor is a Pentium D 840, the motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R and I have 4 gigs of ram. The power supply is a Seasonic 700w. 11 data drives and one parity, all SATA. Best regards Gary T
  3. I hadn't been very active with unraid for a while, pretty obvious from the version 4.2.1. A while back I think I was in a rush and tried to update to version 6 without reading the READ ME. I did make a backup of my flash drive. When it didn't boot I just shut it down and figured I'd diagnose the problem later, well know is later. I restored the backup of the flash drive back to the version 4.2.1 and tried to boot the server but I get a message "verifying data pool", and it just hangs there, and I have verified that the server is configured to boot from the flash drive. What are my options so I don't loose my data. Any help is greatly appreciated. Gary T

By the way, I do know this is support for version 6, but I posted here because upgrading to version 6 might be an option. Gary T
  6. Bill One other thing to check. Under network connections check to see if obtain IP address automatically is checked if not write down the IP and subnet info (so you can change it back for work) and check it. Gary T.
  7. Bill Did you change the name on the work computer or the home computer? If you change it on the home side, I think you would have to change it on the router, and the server also, but I could be wrong. You might try temporarily turning off the firewall on both computers Gary T
  8. Billped Did you change the workgroup name on your work computer to match the workgroup name on your home network? Gary T.
  9. I have a cheap PCI video card in mine, when I pull it out my server won't boot. Put it back in it boots up fine. So I just run it without monitor and keyboard. If you do a search on the web there are some good sites that tell you how to update the bios from a flash drive. When I was running the AB9 Pro, I updated it with a flash drive and it wasn't to bad. Check your transfer speeds after the parity check is done and post back if you still have a problem. Gary T.

oconnellc I can't help on the current price list, but I think I can help on the decision to buy or build. I don't want to take a sale away from Tom, but I had a lot of fun building my server. Since I'm not a computer expert, building my own was a great learning experience. Now when I want to add new disks or if I have a problem I don't feel like such a novice. The few problems I have had have been quickly resolved from all the knowledge and great help from this board. Good luck. Gary T.
  11. GreggP If the light is green you are connected at 100MB/sec, if it is orange you are connected at 1000MB/sec. As for your other problem, something is wrong. I can rip to the server in about 10 - 15 minutes depending on the movie. What version of Unraid are you using? The versions before 4.3 had problems with the onboard lan, and one of the sata controllers. If you post your syslog somebody should be able to help you. Gary T.
  12. Seagate 1TB 32MB cache $199.00 @ Fry's through the 8th.
  13. dvd.collector, You haven't said what CPU you are using. I was using a Pentium D805 (90 watt) and was at about 115 watts at idle, I switched to a core 2 duo (65 watt) and I am down to about 85 watts at idle with a 700 watt 80 plus certified Seasonic power supply, a cheap pci video card, 3 5 in 3 sata backplanes, and a promise 4 port sata card. Several people have mentioned that the celeron single core (35 watts) is also a great choice. Gary T.
  14. Fishbits, Sparkie is right, the Gigabyte board is a great choice (I am also using this board). I was using the AB9 pro before Unraid 4.3beta was released. I had issues with the on-board LAN and the JMicron controller for Sata ports 8 and 9. I'm pretty sure that both problems have been fixed with Unraid 4.3beta, and for about $50.00 from Newegg or Fry's you really can't go wrong with this board. Good luck with your build. I think if you choose either one of these boards you will be very happy. Gary T.

gnollo, I'm using this same board. The onboard lan works with unraid 4.3 beta1. Gary T.
